Sustainable development is highly dependent on macro-level policies in the education system. This institution plays a vital role in economic growth as well as achieving sustainable and human-centered development by prov iding effective human and social capital. The present study has attempted to explain the impact of the education system on development by adopting the institutionalism approach and human capital theory, with a look at some successful experiences across the globe as well as Iran. In other words, the education system, as the main source of creating and developing human capita was examined within the theoretical framework of institutionalism in terms of the role of education system in sustainable development. On the other hand, given that humans have been the focus of attention in the new literature on theories related to sustainable development, such humans must be nurtured in the process of development and educational policies. Therefore, this article intends to provide a better understanding of the role of education in sustainable and human-centered development and coordinated macro-level policies. The results of this research can help senior policymakers and decision makers improve their policies and programs based on the knowledge and experience gained, and help educational institutions develop their strategies and plans to achieve the goals of sustainable and humanistic development.
